La Foto Del Dia: L9 Metro Aliens Vs Transformers

5 Feb

Commuting in the 21st Century-

56 Meters deep into the arteries of Barcelona’s metro grid, the station at Iglesia Major is impressive in both its feat of engineering and futuristic aesthetic.

Comprised of four levels, glass elevators zip up and down the rails creating an effect which can be astonishing and terrorizing that the future is here.

Last Chance To See Brangulí Barcelona 1909-1945 At The CCCB

4 Nov

One of the most amazing photo exhibits  I have seen this year has to be the exhibition at the CCCB  “Brangulí Barcelona 1909-1945” currently in its final week.  Make sure to stop by this weekend in order to witness the connection between Past and Present day Barcelona in an exhibit specifically designed for Barcelona lovers.

TIP: The CCCB is FREE on Sundays From 3PM- 8pm

The show which is devoted to the work of Barcelona-born Josep Brangulí, a  photojournalist whose keen eye was able to capture  some of the best images reflecting the major social, urban and industrial transformations to affect Barcelona between 1909 and 1945. The show is the first retrospective of Brangulí’s work which consists some 300 photographs and original printed material of the time.

The exhibition, curated by the photographers Valentín Vallhonrat and Rafael Levenfeld,  reflects the diversity and the thematic approach of the photographer’s work, centering on topics such as The Tragic Week, Life Before The Republic, The Royal Family at the 1929 Universal Exhibition,  The Fira de Barcelona Trade Fair & The  Post-War years. The one thing that is striking is the way history repeats itself; one can’t help to notice the similarities between the disgruntled workers back at the turn of the century to the modern-day “Indignados” which have Occupied Plaza Catalunya this year.

Josep Brangulí was the first in a line of photographers, in which he was joined by his sons, Joaquim and Xavier, the three of them working together under a single name. The archive was purchased from the Brangulí family by the Generalitat in 1992 and deposited in the Arxiu Nacional de Catalunya. The Archive contains almost a million negatives signed by the name Brangulí, of which approximately half a million can be attributed to Josep. It also contains miscellaneous publications and materials of the time.

If you are in Barcelona make sure not to miss this exhibit which contains a look into Barcelona’s turbulent pass and creates a better understanding of the city and its character.

MODO DESIGN- DESIGN FOR THE TIMES

24 Mar

With a clean and contemporary design philosophy Barcelona Based MODO DESIGN has kept ahead of the game by offering solutions in a modern world.

From Private residences in Menorca to restaurants in Barcelona, and most recently winner of the exclusive design competition that awarded MODO DESIGN STUDIO the first place for their presentation of a 2,110 Sq Meter private villa in Morocco. Modo Design continues to push the bounds of contemporary architecture in Catalonia and around spain.

Back in 2007, MODO DESIGN STUDIO was founded by CHRISTIAN SINTES MIDMORE and DAVID DOMINGUEZ FUSTER
both professors at the prestigious ETSALS  School of Architecture in Barcelona. In just four short year the studio has created some of  their most visionary work  and has combined their mediterranean sensibilities into a studio with a global vision. Modo has redefined the use of conceptual design due to their intense attention to light and space used in private residences as well as commercial spaces.

In 2010, due to the success of MODO, Christian and David decided to expand the studio to include their own line of lighting and home Accessories -DOMO.  Inspired by their design philosophy and dedication to the creation of one of a kind pieces.

PULSOBCN caught up with Christian & David (MODO DESIGN STUDIO) for a quick chat about the evolution of the studio, Spotify, Favorite restaurants and how they have not let the crisis become a 6 letter word but have rather adapted well to the changes in the market; managing to expand their design philosophy to the current global situation.

Hi Guys, Thanks for meeting up with us !

How Did you guys realize you wanted to work together and how did the name come about?

CHRISTIAN: Actually we became great partners during our career at the ETSALS university. I guess we were very used to deal with each others manner, and became great friends on personal level, and great partners on the professional level. We complement each other very well. Modo responds to “Multiple purpose design office”.

DAVID: We met in our second year at the university  in a projects course. We got along well and also shared interest for the same type of architecture. At the end of the year we decided to make a students competition together, and we won.

Would you describe your point of view Catalan? How has being raised in Menorca/Barcelona effected your design style?

C: Well, I would´t say our point of view is necessarily  “Catalan”, we are now focused in generating our own “manner” or “working style”, I dont´t think this manner is very influenced by the Catalan Design, but there is somehow a spanish approach in terms of commitment to a strong concept for each project. The economic situation in the country is not the best you can imagine, so we usually opt for a very strong idea that can be built in an easy way. That does not mean that it is an “easy idea”, we usually like to use the “simple complexity” as a term to describe our work.

D: We have a certain way of doing things that could be related to Barcelona. But mainly because some people who have influenced us live in Barcelona.

If you could redesign one architectural gem in Barcelona which one would you like to take a go at?

C: Realistically I don´t think there is a “supericon” that we would like to design. We like all types of design, no matter if we are designing an interior, a furniture peace or an iconic museum, we are now open to all types of creative developments. I think this is why we have a range of projects which we offer our clients.

D: I would like to do something with Plaça Catalunya. Itʼs a very important place that never really worked well.

I agree!! It would be great to see the focal point of Barcelona redone to fit the style of the city and serve as a gateway to all the arteries that radiate from the center. What would be a collaboration would you like to see happen with your studio (Who is your dream client)?

C: One open to new ideas and with no economic restrictions… <Laughs> Everyone´s dream I guess !!

D: Each client is different. The most important thing for a good relation is that thereʼs a mutual understanding and respect.

What has been your favorite job?

C: We had a lot of fun when we won the “europan 9 competition”, we had just finished our studies at the university, and it opened a great way to take de decision of opening our own “Atelier”.

D: The European 9 project in Soria has been really interesting and has given us a lot of experience dealing with the public administration.

What is a typical day at the MODO/DOMO Studio? Do you guys prefer to work with Music OR do you guys have a muse?

C: Coffee, Phone Calls, Spotify, loads of models and sketches… We don´t have as much time as we would like to “think more and workless”, but we are confident to make that happen sometime! We listen to all kinds of music during the day. We share music with our collaborators, so we always have a nice background.

D: We usually deal with a lot of issues, itʼs all day phone calls and mails. But we love the ongoing “stress”. Spotify is always a good option. We have developed a few fantastic Modo playlists.

Design in times of Crisis? or WHAT CRISIS?

C: Definitely what crisis…Crisis is an oportunity to open new ways of investigation and creative development. Thanks to crisis we have been able to open DOMO Product Design, redesign a new housing system www.b-house.es, and generate a greater social network “crossed visions always enrich the final solution”. We are now in touch with different universities in order to implement workshops, we are teaching, and we are looking forward to export some of our designs internationally.

D: Crisis has given us the opportunity to rethink our way of dealing with design. As an emerging studio it is always interesting to develop new approaches to several problems.

Who do you think has been the most influential Designer in Barcelona?

C: I would not say that Barcelona has a highly influential figure who is able to outshine all designers, I would rather say that there is a lot of potential in little studios aiming to break into the international market. There are very good designers here, you only need a few google clicks to find out. It has been hard, but I think people are becoming more confident now with younger designers and with fresh ideas than a few years ago.

D: In our architecture school years Enric Miralles was a big influence for almost everybody. He was able to open a new and singular way to express spatial matters.

How has your work changed in the last few years?

C: We are a very young studio in terms of architecture, and have not been able to build as much as we would have liked. We started building a few houses and interiors. After our first buildings we were called on to redesign the facade of a very well-known hospital “Clínica Corachan” in collaboration with LLRR architects a project which is currently under construction. As I said before we designed “the b-house project”, out of the imperative necessity to investigate solutions for “low cost housing” designed with “sustainable and low impact” parameters. We are now in a time of expansion.

D: It has changed in many ways. The last years have given us a lot of experience and nowadays we are more aware of the concrete specificities of every design type.

What is your favorite bar/restaurant/hangout where we can find you on a sunday afternoon?

C. I have quite a few personal favorites; I very often visit  “la burg restaurant”. It is almost a tradition for me having dinner at “san telmo bar-restaurant” during the weekends. I would also recommend “les gens que j´aime” and “the banker bar” designed by Patricia Urquiola at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

D: On Sundays I usually grab some sushi at ʻKibukaʼ a Japanese restaurant located in the barrio of Gracia next to our studio…

See The Sexy New Ikea Ad by SCPF

7 Feb

It starts with a glass breaking and evolves very rapidly into a glimpse inside the bedrooms of  spanish couples in various states of bliss. It ends with a simple phrase, “The richest man is not he, who has more but, he who needs less”.

Fresh, sexy and to the point the new commercial currently on heavy rotation on Spanish TV is burning up the airwaves with the sultry flamenco song and a simple  tagline.  What makes this commercial so  different  between Spain and  tv in the USA aside from the obvious, is Spain’s openness to human sexuality. These commercials have ben airing at all times of the day and have not trigger a massive amount of emails or advertising boycotts, which usually happens in the U.S. whenever something remotely sexy comes along. Something refreshing for the 21st century.

The creatives behind the 30 sec Spanish Ikea spot is no other than SCPF, a creative agency here in Spain which had the task of bringing out the best in having an Ikea Bedroom.

On a side note if your Alex Bogusky, the agency has even added your own direct link in order to reach you, an  impressive little tid bit taken off their ironic website.

Brunch @ FEDERAL cafe

22 Jan

Located a stone’s throw from avenida  Paral-lel, FEDERAL CAFE has become the city’s living room. With a  comfortable 3 floor plan which allows the windows to open up to the street. This australian cafe has become a hit due to its flexible floor plans and friendly staff.

However, the key to its success- has to be it’s ALL DAY BRUNCH on Sundays which runs until 5.30 pm. In a city where coffee is the order of the day it’s nice to find a restaurant that serves a proper breakfast and allows you to stroll in without the worry of making it to the restaurant before the kitchen closes.

With a comfortable interior which turns into an outdoor cafe the design of the building is fantastic. I can’t wait for the summer to take full advantage of the terrace on sunday mornings. To find out more about FEDERAL check out their homepage which boasts a great soundtrack while getting familiar with the place.

For a look behind the scenes of the construction of the cafe, check out the FACEBOOK PAGE for before & after pics of the building and the creative process of making this project come to life.

Barcelona No Pants Day 2010- Metro Ride Video

12 Jan

more about “Barcelona No Pants Day 2010- Metro Ride“, posted with vodpod

This past Sunday PulsoBcn.com  participated in the Barcelona No Pants Day-2010.

Photos by Oh-Barcelona.com FLICKR

Organized by BarnaMob.com, 14 different routes were set up in an effort to coordinate an army of  200 underpant-wearing city dwellers going about their daily lives.  At 4:37 NPT (NoPantsTime) Barcelona along with 31 other cities dropped their pants,  stuffed them into their bags and kept walking. ( At 4:37 I was switching trains when it was time to show some legs- with my Andrew Christian Undies ) I hit the escalators and made my line transfer walking the long corridors and even dropping a Euro in the guitar player’s tip bucket.

The group, which weaved through the metro system leaving little to the imagination, got the sort of reactions one would come to expect from a city that is used to “seeing it all”. From a security guard asking me if this was some sort of protest, (I answered it was quiet warm in the metro and I just needed some air) to people breaking out in applause to a woman grabbing her kids and jumping off the metro at what probably wasn’t her stop. The event was covered by all the local new channels as well as newspapers and even 1 pervert blogger who snapped a picture of my crotch.

At 35 degrees, the walk from the Passeig de Gracia exit to the center of Plaza Catalunya was a bit nippy but it was well worth it just to see people’s reaction. Next year my personal mission is to get everyone I know to do this! Including my Catalan teacher, and my flatmates.

In the process I met some great people  all with a great sense of humor and a wild streak. If you or some one you love  participated in the event hit me up on facebook and keep in touch! Remember friends don’t let friends ride the metro wearing pants…

Follow your Bliss

8 Dec

Eight months ago today, a boy arrived in Barcelona with a suitcase and a dream.

After years of imagining what my life would be like living in Barcelona, I packed up my things and left everything behind in beautifuly slick South Beach. It turns out my life is 95% what I imagined it to be like. I am in love with the people, the city, the food, and the culture.

8 months later, I have managed to learn Catalan, discover the city, and even made some  new friends along the way. I have had some amazing experiences. I have learned to enjoy the sunrise after a night of bonfires for St. Joan, learned to be patient in supermarket lines and have celebrated every fiesta (holiday)  like a true Catalan.  After years of travelling the world I finally found my corner.

There are just a few things I miss about Miami- My friends and Family, eating Taco Bell after a night out with friends, machines that dry your clothes, Bond Street sushi restaurant on South Beach & taking people on my Miami Beach hotel tours whenever I had friends in town. However, those will all be there when I go back to visit…

To every world traveler, to every dreamer, to every person with an undeniable quest for knowledge- follow your bliss.

The world is your oyster
